Gala

 1894 b. Sept. 7th. Elena Dmitrievna Diakonova in Kazan, Tatarstan, 
   Russian Model and Muse.
   Among her childhood friends was the poet Marina Tsvetaeva ->. 
 1913 She was sent to a sanatorium in Clavadel, Switzerland for the treatment of tuberculosis. 
    There she met Paul Eluard.

 1915 She began working as a schoolteacher in Moscow.

 1916 During World War I she travelled from Russia to Paris to be with Paul Eluard. 

 1917 m. Eluard. 

 1918 birth of daughter Cecile.
    With E‰luard, Gala became involved in the Surrealist movement. 
    Gala was an inspiration for many artists including Eluard, Louis Aragon, 
    Max Ernst and Andre Breton. 

 1921 Oct; With Paul Eluard visits Max Ernst in Cologne.

 1922 Met Man Ray and is pictured in At the Rendezvous of Friends.
    Summer holday near Tarrenz with Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, his wife 
    Louise Straus, Sophie Taeuber, Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp.
    Starts affair with Max Ernst.

    1924 - 1927 menage a  trois with Paul Eluard and Max Ernst 
    in Paris.

 1925 Max Ernst and Paul Eluard collaborate on Au Defaut du silence 
    a hommage to Gala.
    One edition had manuscripts by Gala and Rene Crevel and original drawings by 
    Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico.

 1929 August; E‰luard and Gala visited Salvador Dali with whom she then 
    started an affair.
    Even after the breakup of their marriage, E‰luard and Gala continued to be close.
    Because of his phobia of female genitalia, Dali­ was said to be a virgin when they met.
    In the early 1930's, Dali started to sign his paintings with his and her name 
    as (i)t is mostly with your blood, Gala, that I paint my pictures.

 1931 Contributed to Le Surrealisme au service de la revolution?.

 1934 Dali and Gala married in a civil ceremony.

 1935 Oct; Dali and Gala visit Edward James at his rented villa in Ravello, 
    near Amalfi.

 1936 She was found to have uterine fibroids, for which she underwent a hysterectomy.
    In New York she was once described as : - part tiger, part martyr,  
    part mother, part mistress and part banker, a curious and 
    inaccessible mixture and so 'single-purposed' in her ambition for
    her husband's career that she had no real friends.

 1958? Remarried in a Catholic ceremony in Montrejic. 
    Mid 1960€'s Jeff Fenholt -> and 
    William Rothlein -> were her toy boys.
    According to most accounts, Gala had a strong sex drive and throughout her life 
    had numerous extramarital affairs (among them with her former husband Paul Eluard), 
    which Dali encouraged, since he was a practitioner of candaulism ->. 

 1982 June 10th; d. Port Lligat. 
    Buried in the Castle of Pubol in Girona which Dali had bought for her.
